I teach now, by the way.  High School Design Concepts.  Digital art work.  Caught up?  Cool.

Working with my students.  Made a portrait assignment for them.  As I gave it to them I picked a picture of a celebrity and started doing it at the same time as them to give them an idea of how I go about things.  Here is a VERY ROUGH step by step of what I did (through layers).  Some of it is out of order from how I actually worked, but still.  

I am also putting this up for a point of reference for my students if they need to come back to this for reference.

Step one, pick a picture.  Then do the base colors of the picture.  Middle tone.  No Highlights, No shadows.  (at least no major ones).

 

 Add eyes and mouth details.  Sometimes nose details.

 

Here is the finished variation, with the last few details I did not show in the step by step for the hair or ears.

Yay!  See you in six months or two years or whatever.

Big Update!

Okay I suck at updating. I know. I mean, all the things that have happened since I last updated? Oh man. I graduated, I did my senior show, I started to DM a Dungeons and Dragons campaign (lol nerd), I got hit by a car, I cured cancer, I performed real sorcery and turned a fish into a chicken (which actually killed itself by trying to go back into the water), and became a government specialized assassin in murdering communist threats using nothing but a Bass Guitar that is secretly also a machine gun.

Only some of that is true, I leave it up to you to decipher what is and what isn't.

Anyways, maybe I should post some art, eh?




This is a drawing of Colossus, which a 4th grade student that I had during student teaching asked me to draw for him by the end of the day. I have been meaning to draw at least one marvel character at that time so I drew it in an hour and gave it to him. I had fun with it.







These 8 children working is a bit I did for art education. All done in Adobe Illustrator. It was basically my final for the Art Ed senior show.




This is the most recent thing I did. It is a friend of mine from... well. I guess Kindergarten. We even went to the same college. His name is Derek. Either way, I decided to do some acrylic painting on bristol board and I decided to do a bit of color studies by doing some photoshop speed painting. This one seemed to turn out the most like I had imagined it to. The painting itself is still in process, although I completed most of it in about an hour and a half. This photoshop study took me aboutt an hour. Fun little quick project.



Honestly, that is kind of it for now. I have been trying to delve more into traditional lately. Hopefully this summer, I will acquire a job, and will do some painting on the side. :]

Benjamin Reyes!

New style! Kind of... actually its kind of in the style of one of my biggest inspirations from illustrator artists. This style is based mainly off of the awesome Jessica Finson. Google her. She's awesome. I have been a fan of her art work for about 5 years now, and just watching her work has given me millions of ideas to grow into the style that I have been accustomed to.

I want to try this a bit more, so I hope to work on more of this style soon. (Kind of already am).





ALSO, the model in this image is the brother of my girlfriend. His name is Ben Reyes. He is a cool dude. Its his birthday today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN.

Ampharos!

I had some issues with the pose. The proportions and perspective was giving me all sorts of problems. I still am not as happy as I would like to be with it, but I figured, its stylized and I wanted to make it look stylized. So I have to stop worrying about it.





I like this pokemon. One of my favorite electric types, right next to Lanturn. I tend to love most of the gen2 pokemon, maybe even more than I enjoy gen1... (I still love red and blue, dont get me wrong).

What? MOTIVATION?!

Now that I am student teaching I am motivated to do some work. Really. I did 3 things this week, and I didn't even have to. Okay. 2 things. But the third one is being worked on right now and I seem to have a little trouble with it.


I don't know what it is but I am inspired to draw pokemon. As shown on my previous posts I have done Oddish and Wooper. Here is a list of a few more I think I may do....

Just to name a few. Whether or not I do all of them... who knows. As you can see, and if you have ANY pokemon knowledge most of my favorite pokemon consist of poison types. Thats right. I freaking love the poison type.


This post is overall a reminder to myself. A list to remind me of things I could/should draw while I go through this semester. Hopefully student teaching won't eat ALL my time away. I want to work on some of these things...

WOOPER?

I freaking love Wooper. He is probably one of my favorite pokemon from generation 2.

My favorite movie this year.

This year... eh... there were some AMAZING movies, and then just a whole lot of crap.

As for block busters...
-Inception was great and a lot of fun but it doesn't sit as my favorite movie this year.
-The Expendables was a lot of fun but you can't take it for anything more than that.
-Toy Story 3... don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved it, and it is amazing. I think I just built it up so high in my mind that when I saw it I was kind of just "eh" about it. (I do this a lot with movies I am super excited about, by the time I watch them, I just don't care).
-Harry Potter. DUH. Was awesome. But it is a Harry Potter movie, I don't expect Citizen Kane.
-Iron Man 2. I liked it a lot. But again. I don't expect any Citizen Kane.


Also, its oscar bait month. And I suck at going to the movies during oscar bait month. I usually wait till they come out on DVD. I am excited for Black Swan, The Illusionist (looks so beautiful), The Kings Speech, and of course, True Grit. I can't wait to see how these play out in the Academy Awards though.


BUT. MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF THE YEAR. THE MOVIE THAT I SAW IN THEATERS 4 TIMES AND WATCHED HUNDREDS OF TIMES AT HOME.

I watch near 10 movies a week, watching 4 in a day sometimes. I have seen things that blow my mind and stories that are so epic I go in fits of obsession for days thinking about it. That being said, I freaking love this movie. This movie is like heroin for the soul. I have never felt this way about any movie until I saw this in theaters.

The flying sequences had me in awe as they were literally breathtaking and beautiful. There are times where I literally grip my seat and lean forward afraid for the Hiccup and Toothless. And the soundtrack has got to be the most amazing soundtrack I have heard composed for a movie. If John Powell does not get a nod for this during Oscars I will punch someone.




I had to post this. Why? Because it inspires me. I research the heck out of everything I am interested in. I watch movies so often I am numb to a lot of things. Information flows into my skull and out again and I absorb it and move on. Not much really digs into my mind and truly inspires me... But this movie... this movie is the first thing in years that has the ability to make me turn into mush... every single time I see it.

Brandy

I am too poor to buy gifts. So I draw pictures for people instead.



This here is a gift to my mother. As well as my sister really. And to myself kind of. It is our dog who recently died 2 months ago. We had NO idea she was going to die until about an hour before she was put to sleep. She was born in our house, and she was with us for 11 years. The odd thing is that she was literally still like a puppy, and completely active. So it was weird to have it be so sudden.

Anyways, it was done in Adobe Illustrator. I did it in about... 6 hours? Maybe? There are some other things I may do to it still. Those ears drove me crazy.

Oddish edits

I did some minor edits to the last image I did. I lightened up Oddish a bit, and desaturated and lightened up the flowers a bit as well so they weren't as vibrant. I may need to change it again.

ODDISH

I Figured its time to do a finished copy of one of the pokemon sketches I made months ago. I love Oddish.



I had fun making this. Although, now that I am finished, I see it more like... as if it were the beginning. I like this image but I think my next pokemon drawing will be better (whenever I get to it. I AM a lazy guy.)

DYNOMITE

So here is my new favorite piece. It's a style I kind of play with every now and again, using ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR to PAINT. Yes. This entire image is done using Illustrator and the PENCIL TOOL. I feel it has a lot of charm and is really fun to work with.

The only thing that is NOT Illustrator is the texture, which, I COULD do in Illustrator, however, the way I placed it was better off done in Photoshop.



ANYWAYS. His name is DYNOMITE. He is a villain for the card set of heroes that me and Ben Cloutier are working on together. The semester is pretty much done and now we are talking about perhaps making it into a comic next semester (although I will not have much time, seeing as I will be teaching).

I don't know how the idea hit me. But it did, and I really wanted to play with it. I mean, a crazy guy obsessed with dinosaurs and explosives? YES PLEASE. I WANTED to give him a bomb vest but figured it had this interesting charm to him just being a scrub with a make shift ski mask and dino costume with a few explosives. Maybe I will give him one later in another image.

I got a lot of inspiration looking at various dinosaur costumes, especially in the mask. But I think where I got the MOST inspiration from came from pokemon. Yes. There is a character sprite in pokemon who kind of sparked this costume idea.




Anyways, this has got to be my favorite piece this semester.

I must say though. I am mostly a low confidence guy (at least I believe so). However, when it comes to Adobe Illustrator, I must say, I know my shit. This is the one thing I know I have GREAT skill in, and I have been awesome at it for near 6 years now. Its just nice once in awhile to have something you know you rock at exponentially.

Daddy Long Legs finished

I finished this a long while ago, but I figured I should throw it up here. I am one lazy bastard. I did about 8 images this semester, and all you have seen is 2 finished projects and 1 set of roughs of character studies.

Anyways, here he is! Daddy Long Legs! He was a lot of fun to work on!

Sluggette

So as I mentioned before, me and Ben Cloutier are working on a trading card set of some sort featuring heroes we have come up with. Here is one of the ones I worked on.




I won't give you a large portion of information on her, and bore you. But lets just say she used to be a model who was the victim of a science accident involving slugs (don't ask) in which her DNA became very slug like. Now she has a blueish gray skin color, leaks slime constantly, is obsessed with beer, and can talk to slugs. Also, she is constantly trying to pick up guys, but no one wants to touch her because she feels like shes covered in snot.

CHEESEY UPDATE ALERT

So, I PROBABLY should have been working on homework instead of this. But, I kind of felt this was necessary.




If you didn't know, I have been dating the lovely Amanda Reyes for 2 years as of tomorrow. So, in celebration of that, and as a gift to her, I did this little piece.

Independent Study

You know whos a lazy bum? It is most DEFINITELY ME. I mean, seriously, not keepin up with my blog? What a jerk.

No seriously though, I made a deal with miss Amanda Reyes that I would try to post on my blog with something new that I have drawn or worked on AT LEAST one time a week. What is REALLY bad, is I made that deal 3 WEEKS AGO. But, then mid terms got in the way and beat the crap out of me.

ANYWAYS! Excuses aside, because I am full of them... I have been working on independent study a lot with mister Ben Cloutier. We are making trading cards focusing on comical super heroes we come up with. Here is a couple images of short drawings/designs I came up with for a super villain named Daddy Long Legs.








Its really just a bunch of small designs I played around with today. I am kind of having fun with him. The last image is if he was a "priest," as if he was the preacher figure for a Daddy Long Legs Cult, and he would be called "Father Long Legs." I also used a Pimp (pimp daddy) as for stereotypical irony to the name, as well as an actual father looking figure. I really don't know which one I like best.

I am freaking lazy

But I finally did something.



I know I tend to call out my own mistakes often when I probably would be better off not doing so, and I have been trying to hold back lately, but I laughed at my own mistake this time. I accidentally made her hand look a little big, and I couldnt figure out why, until I realized (after fixing and nearly finishing it) that I got lost in the original drawing while doing my whole digital thing over it, that I gave her an extra finger. So instead of really trying to redraw the hand on illustrator, I just fixed it the best I could. It doesnt look THAT bad... But meh. I laughed.

Either way, I am a lazy bum who hasnt drawn much over the entire summer except a few pokemon, and, well, thats about it. This was something I planned to do months ago. I'm glad I finally bust up enough motivation to work.

so much jazz goin on

I have literally spent nearly every day of my summer so far at a local high school with Al Hong, working on a mural. I will post pictures of the mural soon, we have gotten a LOT done in the past few weeks but we still need the extra bit to go. In the past 2 days while the students worked on the mural me and Al were given a small project to work on a pillow case face for the high schools "friday night live" show. I really don't know much about it aside from the fact its a show like saturday night live except for the school.

So we were given this pillow case to paint a face on, and the only rules we were given was that it had to be "tasteful," and it had to be a face. The lady showed us an example of a happy clown face. We decided to make it into Andy Warhol.

Al is a great painter, though he does tend to focus more on design work than anything else. He did a great job on the face. I will say Al did the majority of the work on this thing. I worked mostly on the hair. It turned out great. We left it for the lady. I wonder if she liked it?


On a side note, I feel like I have been so far behind this summer. I get out of the semester and into the summer with a LOT of motivation, but it always dwindles away quick. This year I was looking to learn the piano, play more on my bass, write and illustrate a childrens book, get a job, do community art, learn a second language, and so much more. However, I have really done none of that... well I did play a lot of piano.
